Greenman Empowers School Children in Sustainable Food Practices

Last week our daughter company yes& organised another enlightening event at the Berlin Fuchsberg elementary school as part of the Beezdorf Kitchen event series. Around 30 fifth-grade children embraced the opportunity to embark on a culinary adventure: The 6th event aimed to educate school children about the profound influence of food on our climate, supported children in developing a deep understanding of the importance of adopting sustainable practices like the “zero waste” approach and the environmental impact of packaging and plastic waste as well as incorporating healthy food preparation techniques.

During the cooking session the children had the possibility of preparing a soup over a wood fire using solely unpackaged organic ingredients. By adhering to the “zero waste” principle, the little chefs gained valuable insights into minimising their environmental impact, while simultaneously relishing the joy of crafting a delicious meal from scratch. Building upon previous Beezdorf Kitchen events, the children had the opportunity to harvest herbs they had cultivated themselves and incorporate them in their homemade meal.

With a focus on fostering responsible and sustainable resource management, environmental conservation, and promoting the importance of bees for biodiversity, Beezdorf Kitchen is an educational initiative funded by our fund OPEN, operating under the brand Beezdorf. This innovative project is designed to engage school children in the catchment areas of Greenman OPEN’s retail centres by conducting informative workshops and competitions, collaborating with food retailers, local nutrition consultants, educational institutions, and non-profit organisations.

It is deeply rewarding to observe how children, through their actions, contemplation, active participation, and personal experiences, can embrace new approaches and sustainable methods to preserve and care for our environment. The Beezdorf Kitchen project has successfully instilled in the school children a deep appreciation of the impact their choices can make. By nurturing responsible resource management and cultivating a reverence for the environment, Beezdorf Kitchen is shaping future generations of environmentally conscious individuals.
